Discourse Community

Many people have different ways of communicating within their Discourse Community.  It can involve many different people in the community.  There are goals and a purpose when dealing with the Discourse Community. It is good to know what you want to achieve with each part of your community.  The important communities in my Discourse involve my family, soccer team, friends, and jobs.

My family is part of my Discourse Community map. I talk to them face to face most of the time. I communicate with my mom, dad, and brother on the cell phone or on the house phone. I send text messages with my brother and mom.  I communicate with my mom also through emails as well. With my grandparents I do sometimes talk to them on their cell phone. But I usually have to call their house phone to talk to them.  I communicate with my family on a day-to-day basis. It could involve talking about how school is going, college soccer, who I have been hanging out with, and even family issues. When we talk we have a purpose every time it could either be big or small.  We pretty much talk about everything and anybody.

My friends communicate all the time. We talk mostly through texting, talking on the phone, face to face, or through the Internet.  We talk to each other about personal issues and what have we been doing. When we communicate we usually talk informal to each other.  When we talk it usually is to catch up on our lives and what has been going on.  We never have to worry about what we say to each other because we are comfortable. When talking to each other on the computer or text messages we do not watch our grammar or spelling. We abbreviate words, like “brb” which means be right back.

When it comes to soccer and my soccer team, we have our own language to communicate with each other, especially when we are on the field talking to each other. We use words like switch, man on, I’m open, yeah, pressure, push up, etc. We use those words for certain situations.  Off the field they are considered my friends as well. So I would communicate with them the same way as I would with my friends. We do talk informal to each other. When we communicate on the field it becomes a job for us.  We are being paid to play for UTEP so we take it seriously. We have one common goal and purpose when we communicate; it is to win soccer games.

With my job I talk to my co-workers differently when I talk to my bosses. I communicate with them face to face most of the time. Where I work it consists of playing with dogs all day. We have a professional language when dealing with the animals and what problems might have happened or been going on. I talk to my bosses formally. I do not want to talk to them as if I was talking to my friends or family. We have code names for if an animal needs to have a shot or if they are on medication.  When talking to a customer I have to be polite and in a professional manner. This community as one common goal and purpose, that is to satisfy our customers and guests so that they will come back.

As you can tell my discourse communities are very different from each other. We communicate in many different ways. We have different purposes and goals that we have for each other when communicating. I can talk to any one of my communities and get out what I need to get out. Everyone has a different discourse community and the way they communicate with one another.
